About EMDR

What is EMDR

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It was developed by Dr. Robin Shapiro. EMDR uses Bilateral Stimulation to support the processing of traumatic memories by using the brain’s natural orientation toward healing and processing.

What are the logistics of EMDR therapy?

EMDR therapy can be done virtually via telehealth or in person at my office in Madison. The Bilateral movement can be visual, tactile, or audio. during our session, we go over different options and identify the option that works best for you. Sometimes we try a few things to fine tune and explore what resonates the most with your brain!

EMDR therapy may take a few sessions, or it may benefit from ongoing therapy. It all depends on your goals, needs, and personal history.

What does it treat

EMDR was initially developed and researched for treating PTSD. However, more research has been conducted and there is support for the treatment of depression, OCD, Anxiety, chronic pain, addictions and other mental health concerns or stressors. EMDR can also be used to strengthen positive cognitions, internal resources, and supports in decision making.

What do sessions look like

Our first few sessions will include going over your needs and goals for EMDR therapy. We chat about how EMDR can support your healing journey and we begin to identify the neural pathways and underlying emotions and cognitions that are present. We also check in to strengthen some of your internal resources before we dive into the tough work.

follow up sessions:

When we begin EMDR, each session will start with a check-in. After we check in and chat about any important topics, we dive into EMDR. During EMDR, we use Bilateral stimulation to support your processing of distressing or difficult topics/memories. Talking about the traumatic memory is not necessary in EMDR, however I am here to support you in whatever way feels the most supportive/healing. Some people do want to disclose, and others do not. All needs are welcome here.

We often close the session with a grounding technique or tuning into supports and resources that are available to you.
